Welcome, Shane! We’re ludicrously excited about all of this, but we’ll skip all the fangirling and go right to the questions, because that’s what we’re here for.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I guess I’ve always known… My dad is a writer, I grew up around books, and I’ve been reading and writing stories pretty much my whole life.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I need an element of magic, a bit of mystery, and a LOT of action.

What five words would you use to describe your new book?

Magic, Monsters, Mystery, Action, Family

Tell us about your book.

The book is basically a thriller, featuring monsters and magic, set in modern-day rural America. It follows sixteen-year-old Jonas Acheson and his siblings, Lara and Samuel. The Acheson kids have grown up knowing they’re different. Their family has abilities that other people don’t, and they have to hide what they’re from the world around them. As part of all this, they have some kind of power protecting their family and concealing them from their enemies. When that power is broken, the Achesons find themselves drawn into an ancient war between the Holders of Light and the Nameless Dark. Terrifying monsters chase them and they’re forced to abandon their home. While they run for their lives, Jonas realizes that he has to find out the truth about his family’s past, and the sooner the better. But that’s a bit difficult with powerful enemies hunting them down at every turn…

Do you have any quirks when you write? Eat a certain snack? Listen to a certain type of music?

I’ve actually been forced to learn how to write under any conditions… If I only have twenty minutes to write, and the TV is blaring, and my five-year-old is running around being the Incredible Hulk, well… we do what we must. But when I’m able to be more intentional about my writing environment, I like to be surrounded by books, with a steaming cup of coffee nearby, and if there’s a window present and it’s raining or snowing outside, so much the better.

What is your favorite TV show at the moment?

Supernatural!!!

If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The Three Amigos

What is something that most people seem afraid of, that you aren’t?

Awkward silence

What is the best quote or quirk from your favorite character?

“Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean there isn’t an invisible demon about to eat your face.” ~ Harry Dresden in Storm Front by Jim Butcher

What is your favorite color?

Red… no, blue. No, wait! Red. Man, you guys know color is an infinite spectrum, right??? I mean, how am I supposed to chose one thing from an infinite set???

Dogs or cats – Dogs

Past or future – Both. Time is a circle (boom!).

ABOUT:

I’ve had a life-long love affair with books, spanning most of my thirty-six years. Reading Tolkien at the age of eight led to a string of adventures in fantasy, mystery, and science fiction. As an adult, I spent about a decade trying to be a rockstar, then realized that leaving my family behind to go on tour might actually kill me. So I settled down and turned back to my first love: stories. When I’m not writing, reading, or working as a marketing professional, I play my guitar, practice martial arts, and spend time with my wife and three kids (my oldest daughter is also an aspiring author). We live in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, where we enjoy all four seasons like normal humans are supposed to.
